The sketches. #1 had a bit more of a "woman in black" vibe, with the skirts flaring out to catch the unwitting invader, whereas #2, which was ultimately the successful sketch drew more on a flowing smoke monster vibe.

Shadow world concepts. We knew from the beginning that the shadow world would be a part of at least some of the card art, so I did some concepting of the kinds of shapes and integration that the shadow world might include.

The original rough concept sketches I did at the oneset of the project were just throwing things at the wall to see what stuck. Although #1 became the base of the image, we pulled bits from basically all the other designs into the final.
